Veneers have a reputation as the go-to treatment for the perfect smile. Which is partly true — they're genuinely transformative for the right case. But they're also permanent in a way that most people don't fully appreciate before they agree to them. So let's talk through what they actually are, what they fix, and when they make sense.
What a Veneer Actually Is
A veneer is a thin shell — 0.3 to 0.5mm thick — bonded permanently to the front surface of a tooth. Most high-quality veneers today are made from e.max pressed ceramic (lithium disilicate), which is strong, highly aesthetic, and mimics the translucency of natural enamel well. Feldspathic porcelain veneers are thinner and more delicate but allow for exceptional aesthetics when made by a skilled ceramist.
To place a veneer, a thin layer of enamel has to be removed from the tooth surface to make room for the shell. That enamel doesn't grow back. The tooth now needs a veneer on it for life. This is the critical thing to understand before proceeding.
What Veneers Fix Well
- Permanently stained teeth that don't respond to whitening (tetracycline staining, fluorosis)
- Chipped or worn teeth that have lost their shape
- Teeth that are slightly too small or irregular in size
- Mild spacing between front teeth (diastemas)
- Teeth with surface cracks or lines that affect appearance
For these cases, porcelain veneers produce results that nothing else can match. Whitening can't fix structural shape issues. Composite bonding can, but it doesn't last as long and doesn't look as natural. If the goal is a significant, long-lasting aesthetic transformation of the front teeth, veneers are the most reliable option.
What Veneers Don't Fix
Severe crowding or significant bite problems need orthodontic treatment first. Putting veneers on heavily misaligned teeth either doesn't work or requires removing an unreasonable amount of tooth structure to compensate for the angulation. Any dentist who recommends veneers as a solution to significant crowding without first discussing orthodontics is prioritising speed over your long-term dental health.
Gum disease or active decay also need to be resolved before any veneer work. Placing veneers over unhealthy foundations is a short-term fix that fails. The foundation has to be solid first.
How Long Do They Last?
E.max pressed ceramic veneers, with good oral hygiene and no significant bite issues, last 10 to 15 years. Some last considerably longer. The most common reasons for replacement are chipping (usually from habits like biting nails or ice) and gum recession exposing the margin where the veneer meets the tooth.
Composite veneers — the chair-side resin alternative — last 5 to 7 years and require more maintenance. They're useful for minor corrections or as a reversible preview before committing to ceramic, but they're not equivalent in durability or aesthetics.
The Process — What to Expect
At our clinic, we use Digital Smile Design before touching any tooth. This means you see a digital preview of your planned result — the shape, size, and arrangement of veneers — before any enamel is removed. We then make a mock-up in your mouth using temporary composite so you can actually wear the new shape for a few days and decide if it's what you want. Only then is the prep appointment scheduled.
The prep appointment is done under local anaesthetic. Impressions or digital scans go to the ceramist. Temporary veneers protect the prepared teeth while the final porcelain is being made, which typically takes 10 to 14 working days. Final fitting and bonding is the last step — and it's the most satisfying one.
Are They Worth It?
For the right candidate: unambiguously yes. Patients who have lived with significant colour or shape concerns for years consistently describe the change as life-altering in terms of confidence. A smile you're happy with in photos, when you meet people, in every conversation — that genuinely adds up.
For the wrong candidate — teeth that are healthy and straight, with only mild discolouration — whitening or composite bonding is a better first step. Preserve enamel where you can.
