Losing a tooth is stressful enough on its own. Then your dentist says “implant or bridge?” and suddenly there are more decisions to make. Both options fill the gap. That's about where the similarities end.
What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a titanium screw placed into the jawbone where your natural root used to be. It fuses with the bone over roughly 3 to 4 months (a process called osseointegration), then a crown is attached on top. It functions exactly like a real tooth — you brush it, bite with it, and eventually forget it's there.
Here's what most patients don't get told upfront: implants replace the root, not just the tooth. That matters because your jawbone needs stimulation from a root to stay dense. Without it, bone gradually shrinks over the years and can subtly change your facial structure. A bridge skips right past this problem. An implant solves it.
What Is a Bridge?
A bridge fills the gap by crowning the two teeth on either side, then suspending a false tooth between them as one connected unit. No surgery. The whole process takes two to three weeks, and you're eating normally almost straight away.
The catch: those neighbouring teeth have to be filed down significantly to accept their crowns, even if they were perfectly healthy before. That's a permanent, irreversible change to two teeth that had nothing wrong with them. If those adjacent teeth are already damaged or heavily restored anyway, the bridge makes sense. If they're in good shape, it's worth thinking twice.

When to Choose an Implant
For most patients with adequate bone and no major health contraindications, an implant is the better long-term call. It doesn't touch neighbouring teeth, it preserves the jawbone, and it essentially never needs replacing if looked after properly. Patients who've had one almost universally say the 3 to 4 month wait was worth it.
It's also the strongest foundation for more complex cases. When multiple teeth need replacing, implants form the base for full mouth rehabilitation and implant-supported bridges that don't require grinding down healthy teeth.
When a Bridge Is the Right Call
Not everyone is a straightforward implant candidate. If bone density is too low and you'd rather avoid a graft, if the adjacent teeth need crowns anyway, or if getting it done quickly is genuinely a priority, a bridge is a solid option. It's been used reliably for decades and with good oral hygiene can last well over ten years.
The Healing Timeline
A bridge is ready in two to three weeks. After impressions and preparation you get a temporary first, then the final bridge is fitted once it's back from the lab. Some mild sensitivity on the prepared teeth is normal for a week or two.
An implant is a longer process. The screw goes in under local anaesthetic, then you wait 3 to 4 months for it to fuse before the crown is placed. Most patients are surprised by how little discomfort is involved during that healing period — it's typically less than a wisdom tooth extraction.
What If Several Teeth Are Missing?
