Botox vs Fillers — What's the Difference?

Both are injections. Both tackle aging. But they treat completely different problems — and using the wrong one for your concern won't work.

“Should I get Botox or fillers?” It's the most common aesthetic question we hear. People often assume they're basically the same thing — two types of injection that do the same job. They're not.

Botox and fillers treat completely different problems. Using the wrong one won't just fail to help — the result will look off. Here's how to tell which one you actually need.

What Botox Does

Botox (botulinum toxin type A) temporarily relaxes the specific muscles responsible for expression lines: forehead creases, frown lines between the brows, crow's feet. When those muscles can't contract as forcefully, the overlying skin smooths out.

That's it. Botox doesn't add anything to your face. It doesn't plump, fill, or contour. It relaxes a muscle, and a line disappears. Results start showing after 3 to 5 days, peak at two weeks, and last roughly 3 to 6 months depending on the area and how quickly you metabolise it.

What Fillers Do

Dermal fillers are injectable gels, almost always hyaluronic acid, that physically add volume under the skin. Think targeted structure: fuller sunken cheeks, a more defined jawline, plumper lips, reduced hollowness under the eyes. Results are visible immediately and typically last 12 to 18 months — though lip fillers tend to fade a bit faster (around 9 to 12 months) because of the constant movement.

One practical advantage worth knowing: hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if you don't like the result. That reversibility gives most first-timers real peace of mind.

The Simplest Way to Decide

Scrunch your face. Move it. Make expressions. Lines that appear when you move: Botox. Lines that are there even when your face is completely still, or areas that look flat or hollow: fillers.

Many patients need a bit of both. Botox in the upper face for forehead and frown lines, fillers in the mid or lower face to restore cheek volume or sharpen the jaw. Combined thoughtfully, they complement each other. A skin analysis consultation is the cleanest way to map out exactly what you're dealing with before committing to anything.

Will It Look Natural?

The “frozen face” and “duck lip” results you've seen are from too much product or poor injection technique — not from the treatments themselves. Done with restraint by someone who understands facial anatomy, both treatments produce results where people notice you look well-rested and refreshed, not that you've had something done.

We take a less-is-more approach. It's far easier to add a little more at a follow-up than to deal with an overdone result.

Downtime

Botox: essentially none. Tiny red dots at injection points for an hour or so. That's the worst of it for most people, and even that fades quickly.

Fillers are slightly more variable. Lips tend to swell for a day or two, which is normal and settles on its own. Occasionally there's a small bruise, particularly in thin-skinned areas like under the eyes. If you have a big event coming up, give yourself at least 5 to 7 days after lip or tear trough filler.

How Long Do Results Last?

Botox: 3 to 6 months, then the muscle gradually regains movement and a top-up is needed. Fillers hold for 12 to 18 months in most areas; cheeks tend to last the longest because they move the least.
